Background of the study
TikTok has emerged as a transformative platform for shaping phonetic articulation among Nigerian users. The short-form videos on TikTok often feature lip syncs, voiceovers, and spontaneous audio performances that lead to modifications in pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns. Nigerian TikTok users frequently adopt creative vocal techniques to enhance content appeal and express cultural identity (Akinyemi, 2023). These digital practices contribute to observable shifts in phonetic patterns that differ from traditional speech norms. Comparative analysis of TikTok audio trends with conventional pronunciation reveals the influence of digital media on sound production and accent variation (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to document the specific phonetic modifications induced by TikTok trends and to analyze the factors that drive these changes, such as cultural influences, peer imitation, and platform constraints (Obi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the rapid popularity of TikTok, there is limited research on its effect on Nigerian phonetic articulation. Most studies have concentrated on textual or visual content, leaving a gap in our understanding of digital phonetic variation. This deficiency hinders the development of effective linguistic models to address evolving pronunciation trends in digital communication (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the study
1. To analyze phonetic variations in Nigerian TikTok audio content.
2. To compare these variations with traditional speech patterns.
3. To develop models explaining digital phonetic innovation.
Research questions
1. What phonetic changes are evident in TikTok audio trends?
2. How do these compare with conventional pronunciation?
3. What factors drive these digital phonetic changes?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of TikTok on Nigerian phonetic articulation, contributing to digital phonetics theory and offering practical insights for language education (Akinyemi, 2023; Obi, 2025).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on TikTok audio content from Nigerian users, excluding other media and offline contexts.
